Personal Leadership Philosophies
I am a nursing student and also practicing as a nurse in a community primary care facility. The core values that I possess in leadership are empathy, integrity, and accountability. Reflecting on these, I feel that they all underscore the importance of compassionate care, honesty, and taking responsibility for my actions. For example, the empathy value makes sure that I understand and responsive to patients’ needs. Integrity, on its part, helps foster trust while accountability reinforces the commitment to deliver high-quality care while acknowledging my obligations. These values are closely linked to my personal mission which is to provide holistic and patient-centered care that promotes well-being and healing. Also closely related to this is my vision which is to contribute to a healthcare system characterized by excellence, innovation, and a strong ethical foundation.
Upon participating in the CliftonStrengths self-assessment exercise, there are several strong themes that emerged and this marks my areas of strength. Focusing on the first five strengths, these are significance, futuristic, individualization, focus, and maximizer. According to Heinen et al. (2019), the significance strength reflects the desire by an individual to make a meaningful impact in their career which in my case is nursing practice. This strength drives me to seek opportunities where I can contribute to the well-being of patients and the healthcare system as a whole. The second strength is futuristic which signifies my ability to envision and plan for the future. In nursing practice and healthcare in general, this characteristic is important because it allows me to think ahead and anticipate changes in areas like patient care, technology, and healthcare policies. More importantly, it also plays a huge role in fueling my drive to be an innovative and forward-thinking nurse (Stanley et al., 2022). The third is individualization which is a characteristic that highlights my skill in understanding the unique needs and characteristics of individuals. Through the application of this strength, I am able to tailor care to the specific needs of each patient which is important and aligns with the organizational goals for most savvy healthcare organizations. Focus is the fourth strength aspect that emerged and which highlights my ability to concentrate on a goal with unwavering determination and is instrumental in maintaining attention to detail in patient care and in the pursuit of excellence in my nursing studies. The last one is maximizer which implies that as a maximizer, I am persuaded to optimize and improve what already exists in my capacity as a practicing nurse and a student. This is important as it encourages me to continually seek opportunities for improvement.
The two behaviors I desire to improve are analytical and communication. On the one hand, being able to improve my analytical abilities will enable me to make more informed and data-driven decisions in patient care and this will involve better understanding and interpreting of medical information, research, and patient data. Applying these three will be resourceful in enabling me to provide the best possible care. On the other hand, effective communication is fundamental in healthcare and nurturing this will aid in conveying complex medical information clearly to patients, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, and ensuring that all stakeholders are well-informed and involved in patient care decisions.
In order for these two highlighted behaviors to be realized, an objective development plan is necessary (Cummings et al., 2021). Following this, in order for me to strengthen my analytical skills, I plan to engage in continuous learning through the available means both offline and online. I will take up online courses and workshops that are focused on data analysis in healthcare. I aspire to apply these acquired skills during clinical rotations in my clinical practice by, among other ways, critically analyzing patient data and research findings to guarantee evidence-based practice. In order to improve my skills in communication, I will nurture active listening and empathy whereby I plan to attend communication skills workshops and practice these skills during patient interactions. I will, for example, practice to actively listen to the concerns of my patients and validate their emotions. This is important as it will make them better understood and this will ultimately develop trust between us.
