Effective Leadership is essential in nursing practice as it affects communication, teamwork, improved patient care, and organizational success. The good leader is the one who can inspire others to be great, make good decisions, and create a good healthcare environment. It is important to understand one’s opinion of Leadership as it helps them to know their strengths and how much they need to improve. The Conceptualizing Leadership Questionnaire in Leadership: Theory and Practice give insights into various leadership dimensions and into what people think about Leadership. This paper will explore the results of the questionnaire, highlight the dimensions of Leadership that most and least reflect my perspective, interpret the score results, and discuss the significance of Leadership in nursing practice.

Questionnaire Findings

The Conceptualizing Leadership Questionnaire is a tool that measures leadership attitudes based on six leadership concepts: trait, ability, skill, behavior, relationship, and process leadership. The dimensions are each a different perspective of Leadership. Trait leadership is based on the person’s traits that make him into a leader, while ability leadership is based on the person’s natural abilities and skills. Bornman & Louw (2023) define skill leadership as a perspective suggesting that Leadership is a skill that can be acquired and refined through training and experience. Behavioral Leadership is about the actions and behaviors of the leader. Process leadership focuses on interaction, communication, and collaboration with others, while relationship leadership focuses on the interaction between leaders and others. Results of the questionnaire indicated that the scores of relationships and process leadership with regard to the questions were found to be higher. The results indicated that Leadership is not perceived as a hierarchy or a straightforward process, but rather as a more collaborative and interactive one. Moderate scores were also shown in the behavior and skill leadership sections of the questionnaire, indicating that the view taken was that Leadership is a learned behavior and effective practice. Participants’ answers to the trait leadership question resulted in lower scores, indicating lower levels of perceived Leadership depending on innate characteristics or personal traits. Examining the data from the questionnaire, it can be seen that the students’ understanding of Leadership is not as a power or authority of one individual. Yes, Leadership is all about teamwork, communication, and people interaction to achieve common goals.

The exam will be used to evaluate the student’s use of the Personal Leadership Perspective.

The relationship dimension, of the six dimensions, is the one that has the greatest similarity with my current understanding of Leadership. Communication, Trust, teamwork, and respect are very important in good Leadership. Being a nurse leader in nursing practice means working cooperatively with the health care team, the patient, and the patient’s family to provide quality care. Relationship-centered Leadership is essential for developing good relationships and collaboration in the healthcare setting because it is a collaborative and relationship-based environment. I believe that good leaders inspire people to do something by supporting and encouraging them and being understanding and compassionate but not controlling or having authority over them. The dimension that does not best portray my view of Leadership is trait leadership. I think badges of Leadership, like confidence and determination, are there, but I do not think everything that makes a leader effective comes down to personality traits. Leadership can be taught, learned, and developed. People who are not born leaders can learn to be efficient leaders through the development of communication, decision-making, and emotional intelligence skills. I think Leadership depends more on growing and interacting than on characteristics alone, so I believe that is something that was understated here (Dåderman et al., 2022).

The analysis/synthesis of the meaning of the scores.

Based on the questionnaire score, I believe that Leadership is a process that is dynamic and collaborative rather than fixed. High marks on the relationship and process leadership sections reflect the perspectives that Leadership is more about working together, responsibility sharing, and leaders’ and followers’ interactions. These scores also illustrate the emphasis on communication and teamwork as key components of leadership effectiveness. Behavior and skill leadership are rated in the moderate range, indicating a potential for training and development of Leadership. Lysfjord & Skarstein (2024) state that strong leaders exhibit characteristics like accountability, organization, supporting others, etc. Leadership skills are also skills that can be developed over time through education, mentoring, and hands-on experience. This view is based on the concept that Leadership is possible in those who are willing to learn and develop. The lower ratings on the trait domain of Leadership also refute the idea that Leadership is an inborn trait. Instead, continuous learning, collaboration, and flexibility are the ingredients of good Leadership. The overall view from the questionnaire indicates a leadership philosophy of valuing relationships, teamwork, and personal development.

The student benefits from the experience of evaluating the work of nursing leaders.

The findings of the questionnaire offer a glimpse into the Leadership versus management differences between nurses. One of the most commonly seen responsibilities of managers is to coordinate schedules, adhere to policies, and manage the efficiency of healthcare organizations. Leaders, however, are interested in encouraging others to be motivated, teamworking, and have a positive vision to care for patients. Management and Leadership are two essential parts of nursing, but the latter is about influencing and inspiring others in the process of achieving common objectives. The answers to my questionnaire show that I see the nurses as the mainstay of the team and that I work closely with others to achieve better results for patients. Relationship leadership and process leadership are essential skills in nursing, as healthcare professionals need to engage in effective interactions and collaboration within the complex healthcare system. Nurse leaders must monitor and support staff, encourage and guide them in their work. The outcome of the questionnaire will be useful since it will give an awareness of self and clues for areas of leadership development. Knowing my leadership perspective will help enhance communication, teamwork, and professional development. The results also prompt reflection on the role of leadership style on patient care and workplace relations. This knowledge will assist me as a future nurse leader in developing more effective relationships with other healthcare staff members and in being able to positively impact the healthcare environment (Meneses-La-Riva et al., 2025).

Conclusion

Leadership is an integral component of nursing practice in terms of teamwork, communication, and outcomes of patient care. The Conceptualizing Leadership Questionnaire was very helpful in understanding various aspects of Leadership and the perspective I have towards it. The results supported a preference for relationship and process leadership with a focus on teamwork, collaboration, and communication. The findings also confirmed the assumption that Leadership is not solely a natural gift but also a learned behavior. In general, the questionnaire helped to raise awareness of the value of effective leadership development in nursing practice.
