Description of a Selected Clinical Experience

Description of a Selected Clinical Experience

My communication and interpersonal skills in the context of health assessment have been developed significantly throughout this practicum experience, in such aspects as rapport-building and patient engagement. One of the most memorable experiences was a focused health assessment with an older adult who seemed to be closed and hardly communicative at first. My use of a structured, checklist-based “questioning style at the beginning of the encounter restricted the richness of patient answers. The literature confirms that task-centered interviewing can interfere with disclosure and make the patients less comfortable (Sharkiya, 2023). Upon the realization of the existence of this barrier, I deliberately slowed down, used open-ended questions, and therapeutic silence. As the interaction progressed, the patient started to provide psychosocial stressors that were directly affecting the health status. This inspired the value of flexibility and presence in the collection of the comprehensive health history.

Identification and Evaluation of Learning Strengths and Challenges

The most important strength that I have shown in this experience is the increasing level of self-awareness and the ability to change communication tactics on the spot. Despite the fact that I was initially frustrated because the assessment was not developing effectively, this emotional reaction stimulated reflection as opposed to being distracted. Clinician self-regulation of their behavior has been demonstrated to enhance trust in patients and interview outcomes, especially with more complicated or emotionally sensitive evaluations (Butt, 2021). One of the challenges I found was to balance effectiveness and empathy when I was short of time. I realized that speed is a top priority at times, which may lead to missing out or inaccurate information when it comes to communicating with a patient in a more personal way. This experience taught me the importance of bridging emotional intelligence and clinical ability to enhance proper assessment and therapeutic relationships.

Analysis and Self-Reflection of the Experience

Several factors contributed to the result of this encounter, and they included the first apprehension of the patient, my initial communication style, and time management pressures in the environment. The quality of the interaction also changed as I changed my style of communication, and it can be assumed that the initial hesitation of the patient might have been the result of the feeling of being unheard instead of being unwilling to engage. Clinician communication behaviors, such as active listening and nonverbal responsiveness to verbal and nonverbal communication, have a substantial impact on patient engagement (Kwame & Petrucka, 2021). Another way the patient could be viewed is that it took him more time to build trust because of the health experiences. This reflection has made me more conscious of how a clinician’s attitude and flexibility directly influence assessment quality and patient outcomes. In the future, I will keep on advancing my interviewing and reflection skills in order to improve patient-centered care among different populations.

Plan for Ongoing Skill Development

To ensure further development of my communication and interpersonal skills, I intend to receive consistent feedback provided by preceptors, follow more experienced clinicians in the process of the complex assessment, and purposefully train culturally sensitive approaches to the interview. I am also keen to keep on perfecting the documentation practices so that they come out clear, accurate, and professional within the healthcare team.
