Part One
Questionnaires form a powerful tool in nursing research in gathering standard data
among large groups of people in a structured and efficient way. Their main advantage is that
they obtain a sufficient sample size that is necessary for statistical power and ethical
accountability, because small samples may lead to inconclusive or incorrect findings
(Andrade, 2020). Questionnaires are also effective in consistency and ease of comparison in
heterogeneous groups, which increases reliability, provided that they are well designed. They
have, however, drawbacks of bias in response, a low level of depth, and the possibility of
simplifying complex clinical experiences. Instruments that are not designed well can show
high response rates but still cannot measure the intended construct accurately, undermining
internal validity. I believe that questionnaires can best be used to establish trends and general
correlations, especially at the initial phases of research. Then they should be followed by
qualitative methods that can be used to find out richer contextual implications of the results.
Part Two
Barth et al. (2023) introduce a study where the quantitative scores of satisfaction were
mixed with the qualitative feedback of patients, as a review of mixed methods research on
APRN-led technological solutions. This design was suitable in the sense that it measured
what it intended to measure by obtaining both quantifiable levels of satisfaction and the
subjective evaluation of the quality of care. The presentation was transparent and readable,
and the results could be practically interpreted, which revealed successful data source
triangulation. Nonetheless, the research targeted the HIV patients, as opposed to populations
of heart failure. Redesigning the methodology to meet the needs of APRNs in the context of
heart failure treatment, I would adjust the approach to address the usability issues distinct to this population, including fatigue, dyspnea, and low manual dexterity, which have a
substantial impact on engaging with telehealth devices and following the monitoring regimen.
Part Three
The field of healthcare economics is an integral part of nursing practice since nurses
directly affect the use of resources and the cost-efficiency. Razavi et al. (2020) established
that a lower cost of healthcare, in general, was associated with Medicare beneficiaries
attributed to nurse practitioners than with patients attributed to physicians, which reduced inpatient and emergency care usage. This illustrates that nursing is a
value-creating institution and not just a cost center. The chronic disease initiative (APRN-led)
and telemonitoring of heart failure provides a sustainable model to enhance the outcomes, and
at the same time save financial burden on the healthcare systems.

Description

Part One

In the beginning stages of research or when trying to get an overview of a topic, it is common to use a questionnaire. Discuss the use of questionnaires in nursing research, the advantages and disadvantages, and your thoughts on their use.

Rationale: Chapter 13 discusses validity and reliability. With the widespread use of surveys and questionnaires in nursing research, it is essential to understand when they are best used, when they should not be used, and the limitations/advantages they may offer over other types of information gathering.

Part Two

Review the literature and find a study with a mixed methods design that relates to your research topic. Here is your opportunity to decide if you like how the researcher of the study you selected utilized the method, how it was reported, and the applicability of the findings. In your initial post, please address the following questions:

Does this method measure well what was intended?

Is it reported in a way that the information is clear and usable?

What would you do differently?

Rationale: While mixed methods studies are valuable, they are more work than selecting a qualitative or quantitative approach and, thus, are not undertaken as frequently. It is essential to be exposed to and critically evaluate this type of research. When it is done well, it is very informative, but given the additional coordination and analyses, there is more of a risk that it will be underutilized or reported.

Part Three

Discuss healthcare economics as it pertains to nursing. You may choose to look at the impact of a governmental (or other organization’s) impact, a cost-effectiveness perspective, or something different as you choose.

Rationale: Nursing is both a profession and a business. Nurses are in key positions to address and improve cost measures in nursing. By exploring these from multiple perspectives, it may spark further research ideas or increase awareness of the impact of research in the workplace beyond evidence-based care.
