Interview Strategy in the selection of a qualified and diverse workforce.

Interview Strategy in the selection of a qualified and diverse workforce.

Occupation: ED-EMS Technician (Emergency Department EMS Tech)

To attract competent candidates with diversity in a healthcare institution, it is important to establish an efficient interview strategy. The Emergency Department EMS Technician (ED- EMS Tech) is an essential position to assist with patient care, support the work of a nurse and physician, and provide effective emergency department functioning. Thus, the interview process should be designed in such a way that it is objective, structured, and inclusive in order to select only competent candidates with a good sense of people. This plan identifies the interview process, the preassessment tools, and the interview questions that will be used to provide a fair and effective selection of the candidates.

Interview Process Description

The interview will be done over two days in the hospital context or in a private conference room in the emergency department to have a simulation of the work environment. Candidates will also have the freedom to join in virtually via a secure video conferencing platform to make it more accessible and inclusive. The panel interview format will take a structured nature in order to guarantee uniformity and minimize bias because all the candidates will be based on the same standard Questionnaire. This method makes the process more just and enables a successful comparison of the applicants. The interview panel will comprise the Emergency Department nurse manager, senior ED nurse, human resource representative, and present ED-eMS technician. Having a diverse panel group guarantees a variety of views during the process of evaluating a candidate and guarantees, therefore, fair and effective decision-making (Song et al., 2026). The interviews will last about 45-60 minutes. They will involve an introduction to the position, a set of behavioral and situational questions, a question-and-answer session by letting the candidates ask questions, and a wrap-up of the next course of action. The evaluation of candidates will be assessed based on communication skills, clinical judgment, teamwork, and cultural competence using a standardized scoring rubric.

Preassessment Tool

The situational judgment test (SJT) will be a preassessment tool to be used before the interview process. This exam provides the applicants with real-life situations in an emergency department and asks them to choose or prioritize the best responses. SJT is especially effective in assessing critical thinking, pressure-based decision-making skills, ethical reasoning, and interpersonal skills. Notably, situational judgment tests are more accommodating than the traditional cognitive tests since they are aimed at dealing with practical decision-making, unlike academic knowledge. This makes it possible to have a fairer chance to show the talents of candidates who come in with a variety of educational and cultural backgrounds. According to research, structured evaluation tools enhance equity and predictive capability in the hiring procedures (Campion et al., 2020; Ployhart & Weekley, 2021). Besides, firms cited in The Wall Street Journal suggest that skills-based recruitment systems are found to make the workforce more diverse, and magnitude studies are commonly based on the needs rather than the university.

Interview Questions

Situational Questions

  • What would be your actions when you see the condition of a patient get worse suddenly, when the nurse is busy assessing another patient?
  • How are your practice problems in a situation where the patient has been aggressive or uncooperative in the emergency department?
  • How would you behave should you be tasked with anything more than a task to do at a time, and you were not able to get it done within the same time period?
  • What would happen in the case when you realized a colleague is not taking the right steps in relation to the measures on infection control?

Behavioral Questions

  • Write about an occasion when you were under pressure in a high-pressure scenario. What did you do concerning the situation?
  • Provide an example of a situation when you had to work together in a team and achieve something. What was your role?
  • Explain a scenario in which you needed to deal with an uncomfortable patient or family. I responded to this by what?
  • For instance, describe a way in which you have gone astray at work. What did you know about it?

Enhancing Diversity and Inclusion.

The encouragement of diversity and inclusion is one of the key elements of this interview strategy. Structured interviews reduce any bias since all interview candidates will be evaluated based on the same set of criteria. Also, with the introduction of a diverse interview panel, the impact of personal prejudices on the process is minimized, and just decisions are made (Bergelson et al., 2022). Objectivity in evaluating the candidates is also increased through the application of standardized scoring tools. The fact that it uses a situational judgment test enhances diversity because it enables applicants to express practical skills as opposed to depending on theoretical credentials only. Also, physical and online interviewing opportunities will make the process more adaptable to applicants, who are covered by the diversity of geographical and socioeconomic factors. All these measures discussed help in the creation of a diverse and skilled workforce.

Conclusion

An effective interview plan should be applied in recruiting qualified and diverse candidates to fill the ED-EMS Technician open position. By providing standardized techniques of interview, preassessment, and performance appraisal, healthcare organizations can increase the outcome of hiring by improving procedures and focusing on the standard steps that need to be implemented to promote equity and diversity. Not only will this enhance the quality of the workforce, but patient care and the overall organizational performance will improve as well.

Assessment Description
The purpose of this assignment is to provide research evidence in support of the PICOT you developed for your selected topic.

Conduct a search for 6 peer-reviewed, translational research articles published within the last 5 years that demonstrate support for your PICOT. You may include research articles from assignments completed previously in this course. Use the “Literature Evaluation Table” provided to evaluate the articles and explain how the research supports your PICOT.

Once your instructor returns this assignment, review the feedback and make any revisions necessary. If you are directed by your instructor to select different articles in order to meet the assignment criteria or to better support your PICOT, make these changes accordingly. You will use the literature evaluated in this assignment for all subsequent assignments you develop as part of your evidence-based practice project proposal in this course and in NUR-590, during which you will synthesize all of the sections into a final written paper detailing your evidence-based practice project proposal.

Refer to “Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal – Assignment Overview,” located in Class Resources, for an overview of the evidence-based practice project proposal assignments.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
