NU801 Unit 7 Assignment: First Draft Literature Support

First Draft Literature Support
Module 7: Introduction (Required Content) (1 of 4)
Module 7: Readings and Activities (2 of 4)
Current Assignment: Module 7: Assignment First Draft Literature Support (3 of 4)
Module 7: Practice/Clinical/Project Hours Report, Assignment (4 of 4)

Instructions
In the unit 2 discussion, you provided an overview of the ‘big picture’ of the problem you have observed in your practice setting and your observations of the problem in the healthcare community at large. Additionally, in that discussion you provide a description of your practice setting.

Additionally, for that discussion you utilized the Problem Statement Guideline to develop and post your Problem Statement.

In NU 760, in the unit 3 assignment, you created an ‘Aim Statement’ to set the stage for your student DNP project. And you constructed the elements of the ‘P’ (plan) element of the PDSA cycle which is synonymous with IHI’s Model for Improvement.

In NU 760, in the unit 5 assignment, you constructed a synthesis matrix table demonstrating credible resources/articles that were relevant to some aspect of your proposed student DNP project (e.g. the problem, the practice population, the practice setting, the intervention, the evaluation strategies to utilize, etc.). By now you should have received feedback on this assignment from NU 760.

You have faculty feedback on the assignments from Unit 2 and NU 760.

The literature support assignment is an informal paper draft of the literature that frames and provides support for the DNP project.

The paper is to be constructed consistent with in APA (7th ed.) guidelines.

The literature cited should primarily focus on filtered evidence such as reviews (e.g. Cochrane, Joanna Briggs Institute, scoping, systematic, integrated, meta-analysis/meta-synthesis, simple literature, clinical practice recommendation and guidelines) before non-filtered evidence (e.g. individual studies, recommendations, opinions, or other literature).

The paper should be organized to present the literature you reviewed relevant to your proposed project and demonstrate how it is connected it your project.

Please utilize the learning resources on developing a literature review from Unit 6 and this Unit to guide your construction of the literature support draft.
The resource below is provided in this unit. Please consider the organization of the literature review presented in this learning resource and incorporate that approach to organizing your draft literature support paper.

An overview of the problem identified in the project practice setting.
A synthesis of the literature about the identified problem.
A synthesis of the literature of interventions and/or strategies you reviewed that could be utilized to address the problem.
A discussion of the interventions and/or strategies you believe are best suited for incorporating into your project design.
A discussion as to why you believe your selected intervention/and or strategies are the ones best suited for your project design.
Submit your completed literature review to this assignment dropbox. This assignment is due by Sunday at 11:59pm CT.

Estimated time to complete: 8 hours

                                                                     Problem or Issue

The project will address the critical issue of limited access to mental health services for homeless individuals. Mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and substance use disorders are disproportionately prevalent in homeless populations. Unfortunately, systemic barriers like lack of insurance, housing instability, and the stigma surrounding homelessness often prevent this group from accessing needed mental health care. This results in worsening mental health conditions and prolongs their homelessness, further burdening emergency services and increasing public health costs.

                                                               Big Picture and Context

The mental health crisis among homeless populations is not an isolated issue but rather a reflection of systemic gaps in healthcare, social services, and housing policies. In the United States, homelessness affects over half a million people each year, with a substantial proportion suffering from serious mental health disorders. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), approximately 30% of homeless adults live with serious mental illness (SAMHSA, 2022). Untreated mental health conditions exacerbate homelessness, reduce the likelihood of securing stable housing, and contribute to recurring encounters with emergency departments and law enforcement.

Efforts to reach homeless individuals with mental health services have been fragmented, often relying on emergency care or crisis intervention, rather than preventive, continuous treatment. These gaps in care demonstrate a need for more sustainable and proactive mental health interventions that can stabilize individuals and offer long-term solutions.

                                                                     Significance of the Problem

The significance of addressing mental health in homeless populations cannot be overstated. Untreated mental illness is both a cause and consequence of homelessness. Individuals with mental health conditions often struggle to maintain employment or housing, contributing to long-term instability. At the same time, the stresses of homelessness—including exposure to violence, substance abuse, and lack of access to necessities—further deteriorate their mental health. Without access to care, homeless individuals face a downward spiral of worsening health and an increased risk of incarceration or premature death.

In addition to the individual toll, the failure to adequately address mental health needs in homeless populations places immense pressure on public resources. Emergency rooms and jails often serve as default mental health care providers for the homeless, but these settings are expensive and ill-equipped to offer continuous care. By providing targeted mental health services, it is possible to reduce the cycle of crisis care and decrease long-term costs for cities and communities.

                                                                   “Neighborhood” Context

The problem of mental health care for homeless individuals primarily “lives” in urban centers, where the highest rates of homelessness are concentrated. These areas are characterized by overcrowded shelters, public spaces used as temporary living areas, and limited access to comprehensive healthcare services. Mental health services in these neighborhoods are typically overstretched, with high demand and few resources available to address the complex needs of homeless individuals. Furthermore, the transient nature of homelessness makes it difficult for individuals to access consistent, ongoing mental health care.

                                                                      Problem Statement

The lack of consistent and accessible mental health services for homeless individuals in urban areas contributes to worsening mental health conditions, prolonging homelessness, and increasing the use of emergency services and law enforcement. This project aims to develop a sustainable, community-based model for mental health services to homeless populations, focusing on continuity of care and long-term stabilization.
