The Evidence Based Practice of The Joint Commission.

The Evidence Based Practice of The Joint Commission.

Evidence-based Practice: Definition and Goal of EBP.

Evidence-based practice (EBP): method of incorporating the highest quality research evidence, clinical experience and patient values to make better decisions in health care. EBP is aimed at maximizing health care interventions by ensuring they are safe, effective, and based on the newest scientific evidence instead of tradition or personal preferences (Connor et al., 2023).

This presentation gives a general overview of the Healthcare organization.

I went to the Joint Commission website, which is a website that accredits and certifies healthcare organizations in the United States that are not affiliated with the not-for-profit organization. It is the organization’s aim to enhance the quality and safety of healthcare through accreditation, certification and enhancement of performance.

The website is a reflection of Evidence Based Practice, where’s it found?

The Joint Commission’s web site positively exhibits evidence-based practice. For example, accreditation requirements have been developed to help enhance healthcare systems with respect to quality and patient safety. The standards are based on research evidence, and on the views and recommendations of health care professionals and good practice. The first one is the National Patient Safety Goals program (Young & Smith, 2025). Goals are to decrease medical errors and enhance patient results with the use of evidence-based interventions. Goals are set based on scientific publications, input of healthcare professionals and input of stakeholders. The Joint Commission also offers education, performance measures and tools for quality improvement which could help spur evidence-based interventions in clinical care.

There is significant use of EBP in The Joint Commission. Evidence based care principles are incorporated into accreditation standards, certification, patient safety programs, and quality improvement and education products. The Standards are reviewed and amended regularly to include the latest evidence/in best practice. This reflects the commitment of health care industry towards ensuring safe, effective and quality health care services (Alhawajreh et al. 2023).

The evidence-based approach of the Organization’s Work.

Evidence-based practice is used well in the Joint Commission’s work, as their standards and recommendations rely on the most current research findings and expert opinion and outcome data (Wadhwa & Boehning, 2023). Identification of practices to improve patient safety and improve quality of healthcare is evidence based and supported by the organization. Through the standards, The Joint Commission encourages the use of evidence-based actions throughout healthcare organizations.

Changes to my understanding of the organization.

I studied the role of The Joint Commission on their website and did a good job. My first thought for the site was that it was an accreditation agency. Now I DO know that it is also playing a significant role in the progress of evidence-based practice, patient safety, and quality improvement. I was more confident in their ability to improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes because the organization’s focus on research and measurable outcomes to guide healthcare standards.

 Conclusion

There is a great deal of evidence-based practice reflected in the JCAHO website and activities. It is clear the organization has made efforts to incorporate research evidence into the practice of health care by complying with accreditation standards, patient safety goals, certification programs and quality improvement efforts. The Joint Commission, then, is a useful and important enabler of evidence-based health care and health outcomes.
