The Joint Commission’s Evidence-Based Practice
Outline the healthcare organization’s website. Tell about the healthcare organization’s website.
I have looked at the website of The Joint Commission, a nonprofit, independent accrediting and certifying organization of healthcare organizations and programs in the United States. There’s a lot of information about accreditation, patient safety, quality improvement, performance measurement and best practices in healthcare. It can be used as a resource for healthcare organizations and professionals who want to enhance the quality and safety of patient care (Wadhwa & Boehning, 2023).
The Evidence Based Practice section is on the top of the website.
The Joint Commission’s website is rife with evidence-based practice (EBP) as reflected in its topical discussions and announcements. Their role is to continually improve health care for the population by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring health care systems to improve the safe, effective and high-quality care they provide. EBP is reflected in the formation of accreditation standards or National Patient Safety Goals based on the most recent research and best evidence available (Connor et al., 2023), as well as in clinical practice recommendations that are grounded in the most recent evidence and best practice. Additionally, the website emphasizes the role of the data collection, monitoring, and quality assurance processes in the decision making of healthcare and the enhancement of the outcome of a patient.
Has the Organization’s Work been conducted with EBP?
EBP is found in all aspects of The Joint Commission’s work; standards and recommendations are built upon scientific research and expert consensus, and clinical guidelines are based on evidence-based studies. Verma (2022) believes that any healthcare organization aiming for accreditation should be able to demonstrate adherence to good practice, which has been shown to improve the quality and safety of healthcare services for patients. The organization’s ongoing commitment to continually revising its standards as more evidence comes to light is additional evidence of its dedication to evidence-based healthcare. An example of how The Joint Commission standards has been applied in a clinical situation by a nurse is hand hygiene. Nurses should practice good hand hygiene, use the best evidence to practice infection prevention practices before and after patient contact. Numerous studies have proven that effective hand hygiene reduces HAIs, enhances patient safety and improves patient outcomes. Nurses’ adherence to these standards helps to ensure safe, quality and evidence-based care for patients.
Has the information impacted my interpretation of the organization?
The Joint Commission’s web site gave me positive information that changed my perception of the organization. Prior to arriving here, I hadn’t known The Joint Commission other than as the accrediting body for health care organizations. I discovered that there is a much broader scope of patient safety, quality improvement and evidence-based healthcare practices into which the organization fits. For instance, the National Patient Safety Goals and quality improvement resources show the organization’s dedication to assisting health care providers in the adoption of best practices instead of merely checking their compliance. Having this information helped me appreciate more The Joint Commission’s role in helping to enhance the quality of healthcare and patient outcomes throughout the healthcare system.
